Valpy Street Bar & Bistro is a long standing well known classic with almost cult status, based in the heart of Reading. It’s known for its incredible food, tailored drinks and warm and friendly atmosphere. Owner Andrew Norman trusted us to help him to create a new look and maximise the appeal of every space. The restaurant itself was split over 3 floors, the main bar and restaurant in the basement and a small seating area at ground floor.
The biggest challenge for this restaurant has always been about encouraging customers over the threshold. They wanted to communicate the downstairs offer beyond the small ground floor barrier that the building naturally creates. We focused on breaking down that barrier. We transformed the ground floor into a light and inviting space that encourages exploration. It draws you in with a much lighter palette, supported by warm tones of the upholstery and lighting. We added new planting throughout and a cosy seating area that allows you to sit back with a drink before making your way downstairs for your dining experience.
We refreshed the basement to create a private dining space, new look bar area and completed redesigned restaurant space. The new format has maximised the appeal of the space, creating usable spaces that people want to spend time in. Together with Andrew’s new menu and the same seamless service Valpy Street stand outs as one of Reading’s best.
